Aston Villa Player Ratings vs Leicester City

This afternoon saw Aston Villa see off the Foxes in what should have been at least a 3-1 victory but ended 2-1 at Villa Park. Goals from Emi Buendia, or was it two for Ezri Konsa?! gave us all 3 points and continued Steven Gerrard's near-perfect start with 3 wins from 4.

Emi Martinez 8.5/10

Emi had more to do this game than he has of late, but that match-winning save from Harvey Barnes' looping header in the 75th minute was out-of-this-world good, and shows how switched on he is, from beginning to end. The goal from Leicester was unlucky, after missed chances to keep it out from Matty Cash, Marvelous Nakamba and Ezri Konsa but overall, Emi made some great saves when called upon and his time-wasting is first class.

Matty Cash 7/10

Cashy had a couple of sloppy moments in the first half, after Leicester chose his side as their preferred form of attack. A chance in the 27th minute came off Schmeichel's boot and he's unlucky to not get an assist from Ramsey's should-have-been goal just before half time. His second half was much better with his constant manning of Harvey Barnes keeping the Leicester man much quieter. A good game for the Polish Cafu but his crossing still needs work with only 67% accuracy.

Ezri Konsa 8.5/10

This man is the Rolls Royce and deserves so much more applause than he gets, but we, the Villa Faithful, adore him. Did everything that was asked of him tonight with 3 duels won, 1 aerial duel won and a pass success rate of 82%. Scored both goals, after the first one caressed his boot laces following Emi Buendia's header, and the second was a great tap-in between Schmeichel and the back post.

Tyrone Mings 8/10

Can't fault Mings this game. He put his head, or foot, to everything that came his way and kept things simple at the back - just what we like to see. His passing could use work at only 64%, but he made 7 clearances (5 with his head) and lost 0 duels today.

Ashley Young 7.5

Are we sure he's 36?! Youngy had a great performance at left back. Not his preferred position, as we know, but he did an excellent job of keeping Lookman quiet, winning us 4 free kicks, and marauding up the pitch on a number of occasions.

Marvelous Nakamba - 9/10

6 weeks ago, "Nakamba" was said with a groan as you saw his name on the teamsheet, but he has come alive under Stevie G and is now top of that list every match. His passing accuracy says it all at 93% and it's hard to remember a moment during the game where he lost the ball. He broke up the play every chance he got, passing forward when given the chance and was a constant force in the midfield. My man of the match today.

Douglas Luiz 7/10

Not as good as he was in that 2nd half against City but worked hard and was great going forward once again. Lucky not to give away a penalty on the edge of our box just before he got subbed off.

John McGinn 8/10

Ginny has been quieter of late (perhaps it's the lack of Irn Bru in his bloodstream?) with 27 of his 31 accurate passes this game in the Leicester half, but that bulldozing run down the right in the 87th minute was an absolute joy to watch and he was unlucky not to get on the score sheet himself. He might be a little more quiet than usual, but he's still Super John McGinn.

Emi Buendia 6/10

E10 didn't have the greatest of games today, losing half of his duels, which led to more than one chance for Leicester. His creation is still excellent as is his vision, and it was sheer bad luck that the first goal won't go down as one for him, but he needs to work on keeping the ball at his feet.

Ollie Watkins 7/10

Ollie was frustrating at times this game. His work rate was great, linking up with midfield as well as his sidekicks in Buendia and Ramsey, but he lost more duels than he won (7/5), and finding the back of the net seemed like an impossible task today.

Jacob Ramsey 7.5/10

Jacob Ramsey, he's one of our own! A solid performance from the youngster today, he carried the ball well and how that goal wasn't given will go down in Villa folklore. He should have scored in the second half as well, but didn't have the composure to take the second touch and put it past the keeper.

Subs:

Morgan Sanson, Carney Chukwuemeka, Axel Tuanzebe - NA

It's hard to give ratings for players who barely saw 15 minutes of play, so no ratings for them this match. Sanson looked good in possession, making a few runs forward in the closing stages. It'll be good to see more of him but it's going to be hard to break up that midfield 3 at the moment. Carney won us 2 useful free kicks, especially the last one in the dying seconds to ensure the win. Looks good with the ball but needs the strength to hold off the opposition and stay on his feet.

Not the prettiest of performances from the Villa today, but getting a win as we head to Anfield next weekend will keep everyone's spirits high. UTV
