Aston Villa Player Ratings Vs Liverpool

Aston Villa fought and scratched but unfortunately came away from Anfield with no points following a 1-0 defeat. The result however doesn't take away from what was a decent performance by many of the Villa squad. Let's jump into some player ratings.

Emi Martinez - 8/10

I tweeted earlier that Emi Martinez lives rent free in the heads of all the 'Greedy six' teams and this weekend was a prime example of that. His game management was excellent as he frustrated the Anfield crowd much the same way he almost ruined Bruno Fernandes' career on our visit to Old Trafford. The penalty was practically unstoppable so there's no blame there and outside of that Emi was the usual outstanding presence we've become used to.

Matt Targett - 7.5/10

Matt Targett returned to the squad after missing the Leicester game and barely put a foot wrong. With the assistance of our newly revamped midfield, Targett was able to pocket one of the greatest players in the world in Mo Salah for the majority of the game.

Tyrone Mings - 7/10

If it wasn't for giving away the penalty that cost us the game I think I would have gone 10/10 for Mings today. He was colossal in the way he stopped everything that Liverpool threw at Villa's defence today but unfortunately the foul on Salah (soft as it was) was enough to send the winger to the ground in dramatic fashion. Mings won't need telling how costly his lapse in concentration was and nobody will be more upset than he is so please don't go giving our captain grief on social media!

Ezri Konsa - 7.5/10

Konsa is the best English defender to never be called up to the England squad and I won't hear anything different. Today he showed his quality as he always does with only one dodgy back pass to Martinez that dropped his overall score today. The way he stopped Liverpool's 3 on 1 break towards the end of the game was nothing short of outstanding.

Matty Cash - 6/10

I don't want to single Cash out at all but Liverpool seemed to have a lot of Joy attacking Villa's right hand side with Mane looking like he was having a great time down the left as Cash would often get to close too him and dive in recklessly as well on one occasion. Going forward he looked decent but struggled to handle Mane.

Marvelous Nakamba - 7/10

Unfortunately Nakamba's game was cut short after being hooked for Sanson after recieving an early yellow card. He looked well up for it and did really well, however there were times where he looked like a walking red card and unfortunately the opposition knew it so the sub was the right call.

Douglas Luiz - 6.5/10

Dougie did alright but never set the world on fire. It was disappointing to see him smash the ball into the side netting early in the first half from a decent set piece position but aside from that he never made a major error. He did well when he had to drop back to fill Nakamba's more defensive position but he's definitely had better games.

John McGinn - 8/10

Arguably Villa's best outfield player. He did everything we've come to expect from Super John McGinn and was a pest all game, especially in the first half. He was a ball of energy and never gave up the fight.

Jacob Ramsey - 6/10

It was tough for young Jacob Ramsey. All three forward players struggled to get into the game and the young midfielder will certainly have better days ahead

Ashley Young - 7/10

The evergreen 36 year old felt like our only real outlet in the first half and nearly broke through with a clever header which could have easily led to a square ball to Watkins if it wasn't for Matip's excellent positioning. He also acted as great support in his defensive duties even if he did begin to fade in the second half before being subbed.

Ollie Watkins - 6/10

Sadly there's not a lot to say about Watkins in this game. He was mostly isolated as Liverpool dominated possession and never really did enough to get himself into the game. Onwards and upwards for Ollie.

Morgan Sanson (7), Emi Buendia (7), Danny Ings (6)
