Aston Villa To SIGN Pedro Goncalves This Summer?

It has been reported by numerous sources that Aston Villa want to sign Pedro Goncalves.

Villa have apparently been following Goncalves for a long time and there is a good chance that a deal could be done at around €40m/€50m.

Pedro Goncalves is a twenty four year old Portuguese midfielder/winger playing his football for Sporting CP in the Liga NOS. He has scored twelve goals and got six assists in the league for Sporting this season, and has played nine games in European competitions, scoring three and assisting two.

Goncalves wouldn't be a complete newcomer to the Premier League. He was at Wolves until 2020 and made one appearance for them in the Carabao Cup.

Goncalves really made a name for himself last Thursday at the Emirates away at Arsenal in the Europa League as he scored from the halfway line to help his side advance through to the quarter finals and knock top of the Premier League, Arsenal, out.

However, it isn't just his magnificent goal against Arsenal that has caught the eye of those at Aston Villa. Apparently, he has been long admired for a long time and this summer could be the time for Goncalves to come to Unai Emery's side.

Goncalves can play as a central midfielder or on either flank. If Unai Emery was to bring him in this summer, you would think he'd play as one of the wide midfielders where John McGinn has excelled so far.

Goncalves averages around 2.84 progressive carries per ninety and 1.44 successful take-ons per ninety. In comparison to current captain John McGinn, he only averages one progressive carry per ninety and 1.22 successful take-ons per ninety.

It is no doubt that Goncalves would be a significant upgrade on John McGinn. Not just because he averages more progressive carries and successful take-ons, but because he's a lot more technically gifted, he gets more goal contributions and he's younger and therefore has a higher ceiling. It would be worthwhile keeping John McGinn around, he'll be Villa's longest serving player when Jed Steer leaves this summer. However, if Villa truly want to make the next step in the project, improvements on the squad are needed, and Pedro Goncalves would definitely improve our squad.

There's always the worry about signing players from abroad as to whether they'll settle in to Premier League life. There may also be high wage demands from the player's end due to him coming from a highly reputable club playing in Europe. However, it is definitely a risk most Villa fans want to make and as it stands, a risk that the club look like they want to take too.

He also reportedly has a release clause of around €80m which may make things even more interesting. However, Villa look like they want to make a slightly smaller bid before splashing out on the release clause and breaking their transfer record.

It's going to be a very interesting few weeks and months ahead for both Pedro Goncalves and Aston Villa. We'll have to wait and see what happens...
