Wednesday, Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Danny Ings.
The Southampton and England striker joined us for a fee of what is known as £25m + £5m add ons, and the signing came completely out of the blue! No Villa fan was expecting it, there were not any rumours leading up to the signing apart from a slight interest a few weeks back from the West Midlands based club – Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham were also interested, however Aston Villa managed to get hold of the twenty nine year old before anyone else.
Danny Ings is a boyhood Southampton fan, however chose to leave them to join Aston Villa. He said “I think the club itself is a huge club as everybody knows, you can see the direction that the owners want to take this club, as I said it’s a huge club with a huge reputation and a huge expectation from the fans, it’s a challenge I couldn’t really turn down.”
How Will Danny Ings Fit In At Aston Villa?
The big question surrounding Danny Ings at Aston Villa is just how Dean Smith will use him. The majority of the fanbase believe Ings is too good to be understudy to Ollie Watkins, but will Dean Smith play two up front? There is of course the other option, and that is to move Ollie Watkins back out wide where he spent most of his time at Exeter City and Brentford, then play Danny Ings as a lone striker in front of Watkins himself, Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey, as Jack Grealish has departed to Manchester City..
Danny Ings is prone to the occasional injury. He has missed twenty two games in the past three seasons through injury. If Danny Ings has bad luck with injuries at Villa Park and is ever on the sidelines, this could mean Ollie Watkins goes back up front where he has proven he can play, then either Anwar El Ghazi, Bertrand Traore or Trezeguet fill in for him on the wing.
It’s going to be an interesting end to the window and start to the season, Aston Villa fans expect a few more names through the door, James Ward Prowse, Todd Cantwell and Axel Tuanzebe are all big talking points amongst the fanbase at the moment. Will we see any of those names at Villa Park next season with Danny Ings? We shall see…
