The Return of Wesley

Wesley Moraes (24) Has been out since the 2-1 win away at Burnley he did score the opening goal for Villa, but then he was subbed on the 71st Minute with a major injury to his cruciate ligament in his knee, with surgery required it has put him on the side lines for over a year now. Wesley has only played 21 Games with 5 Goals and 1 Assist to his account, but for a 24-year-old professional he has only 128 games and 37 goals to his 5 Year career so far, with that in question how is he going to fit back into the current squad? And Is he going to be mentally prepared for a battle in the starting 11? There are so many questions to be asked, so what answers are we going to get.

So, one of the interests will be how is Wesley going to fit back in? Well, the squad has changed in shape and personnel since Wesley first came to villa. He was a lone number 9 up top for most of his 21 games in the 2019/2020 season, At the moment Ollie Watkins who has been playing a similar role and been working hard up top, certainly turning out to be Fan Favourite since he signed, with his current season stats So far started 19 games scoring 8 with 2 assists and a healthy expected XG rating 10.7.

At the moment Wesley is back with the squad training to near full capacity, only just starting light contact in the past couple of weeks, but how long before they start introducing him into matches to start building up his game time. Personally, I don’t think we will see him until the later stages of this season or next season, as we know they won’t rush him back.

Obviously, Wesley is going to be eager to get back to match fit and start challenging for the top spot on the pitch, and make up for lost ground, the question is will Dean Smith play them together, meaning that the shape and tactics of the squad will change to accommodate Wesley or is he going to be rotated with Watkins and keep the shape. It will be difficult competition for Wesley as Watkins is playing really well and settled into the squad pretty quickly, I would like to see Watkins and Wesley play together will provide another dynamic to the attack.

Wesley will want to prove that he is worth keeping at the club, and kick start his career again. The concern will be, after the injury he has sustained will he be injury prone, also the injury to his knee will have hit his confidence too. His mood was low straight after finding the extent of the injury he said” for 20 days I cried every day because I knew how bad it was”. The injury also happened not long after his First National Call up for Brazil. With the Excellent Medical and support staff he has been in safe hands and his preparation back into the squad will measured. Wesley will certainly come back with determination and hope he is back sooner rather than later.
