Traore out, Trez Through - AFCON Semi Final Review

Traore returned in vain to captain his side. Despite a good performance in the face of a brilliant Senegalese side, Burkina Faso were knocked out of the tournament. Trézéguet's role in the Egyptian side is nailed down now, he has consistently came off the bench for the side in the second half, and seen the team out through extra time and even on to penalties.

Burkina Faso 1- 3 Senegal

Burkina Faso came into this tournament nowhere near favourites, so to make it to the second-to-last round of this competition is a credit to this side. A performance of particular note in this game was Liverpool winger Sadio Mane who played exceptionally, something that has always not been the case for him back at Anfield. Senegal dominated the pace of the game throughout, and held on to win despite some resilient play from Burkina Faso late in the first half. However it was just not meant to be for the Burkinian side, who conceded three times in the last twenty minutes.

Traore has played well this tournament despite a supporting cast of not quite household names. He was the standout Burkinian player in this loss. This is especially impressive when noting the quality of the Senegalese defence, who played brilliantly throughout. An area of this game he played particularly well in was his 1v1 play.

Traore Player Rating - 7.5

Next Game - 5 February. Cameroon

The dreaded third place playoffs await Burkina Faso, who face hosts Cameroon. If they win this game Burkina Faso can replicate their 2017 AFCON performance by finishing in third place. However Cameroon will want to fight one more time in front of their home crowd.

Cameroon 0 - 0 Egypt (1-3 Penalties)

Another game, another tight win for Egypt in this competition. Despite having often not looking dominant in games, they've managed to find a way to win, albeit in the latter stages of the games. Egypt were without their manager Carlos Queiroz, who was sent off late into the match

Trezeguet appeared to be on the way out at Villa park, as rumours of a move to the Turkish league swirled during the tournament. However the 27 year-old has been named in Villa's updated premier league squad list. With his performances not overly impressive at the tournament it will be interesting to see how he fits in in Steven Gerrard's squad.

Trézéguet Match Rating-7

Next Game - 5 February. Senegal

The most successful team in the tournaments history are back yet again to the final. Senegal have never won AFCON before, and with a talented but aging squad they'll certainly want to win this one. The fixture is taking place at Yaounde's Olembe Stadium, where 8 people tragically lost their lives last week, following a stadium crush.
