Villa Lads Both Qualify For Knockouts - AFCON Round 3 Review

This matchday saw yet another set of average performances from the Villa men. Traore returned from his brief spell away with Covid-19 to the starting line-up, to draw 1-1. Trezeguet yet again failed to make the teams starting line-up, coming off the bench in his teams 1-0 win.

Burkina Faso 1- 1 Ethiopia

A tough fought draw for both teams, and maybe a game Ethiopia feel they should have won, considering their attacking presence throughout. Burkina Faso took the lead with a wonderful assist from midfielder Guira, chipped over the keeper with ease by Cyrille Bayala. However a handball in the box after the half would ruin Burkina Faso's chance at a win. All three goals the side have conceded this tournament have been from the spot.

Coming off his bout with Covid, expecting a brilliant game from Traore feels unfair. The captain didn't play poorly, but failed to bring himself to the game like many would hope. He was heavily involved on his return making 51 touches, and passing 18 times in his full 90 minutes. He also got stuck in defensively.

Traore Player Rating - 7

Next Game - 23 January. Gabon

Gabon have not lost a single game so far in the tournament, finishing second in a competitive Group C. They face Burkina Faso after their only win so far, beating Comoros 1-0. Gabon will be missing their star man, Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He returned to his London club following Covid related heart issues.

Egypt 1- Sudan 0

Egypt just needed a point to get themselves to the knock out round, but got 3. They looked dominant most of the game. A corner in the first half put the side ahead, with Mo Salah almost making it two shortly before the half. Despite some last-minute chances from Sudan, Egypt held on.

Trezeguet came off the bench in the 66th minute. Many had hoped this tournament would be Trez's time to shine coming off of injury, however this game was just another in a set of poor performances at the tournament for the 27 year old. However with Egypt through to the next round he still has time to shine.

Trézéguet Match Rating-6

Next Game - 26 January. Ivory Coast

Egypt face in-form Ivory Coast in the next round, who topped Group E. They have not lost all tournament, and their only instance of dropping points came from a 93rd minute goalkeeping mistake in their second fixture. The side features many prem players such as: Serge Aurier, Nicolas Pepe, Eric Bailly, and Wilfred Zaha. With Ivory Coast in such good form, this will be a tough fixture for Egypt.
