Where is it going wrong for Villa?

Well... Once again, Villa have a disappointing result, a 0-1 loss at home to relegation-ridden Watford, sends Aston Villa fans into meltdown...

So how can Gerrard get his side into having a positive end of the season? Well, we have to start by being more compact defensively. It's been an absolute shambles at the back for Villa, last 3 games especially, with 5 goals conceded in the last 3 games. A reason why fans think we have been poor at the back, is the loss of Marvelous Nakamba... He was a player who did all the dirty work in front of the defenders; and since his loss, the replacement in Douglas Luiz is a player who does not seem to enjoy doing the same. This is due to the fact that Luiz isn't a natural number 6. He likes to drift forward and be on the ball as much as possible. Unfortunately, as Villa failed to sign and out and out Central Defensive Midfielder in January, it has caused us all sorts of problems in the midfield, due to Gerrard having to readjust.

Performance levels within the midfield, have dropped, with calls for tireless midfielder John Mcginn to be dropped from the starting XI. Two fairly poor performances from the Scottish International, seeing sloppy passes and a lack of attacking ability when he has the chance. A long ball every now and then will pay off, but when it is constant long passes throughout the game, it can be frustrating as it will force us to lose possession, at a time where we have good momentum. Once again, the fact that we have a lack of a defensive midfielder could be causing John Mcginn to sit back to support Douglas Luiz in an unfamiliar position. But John Mcginn's best abilities is being used up-field. Having him further up will be risky, but will help improve our calmness in midfield.

The full-back situation, now I've seen a fair amount of debate over this specific role over the last few weeks, but the main problem isn't the players; but it is the way they are being told to play. Both full-backs, are being told to push higher up the flanks, this causes both RCM and LCM to drop into the full back roll to cover. We are being outnumbered on a counter-attack because of this. A tweak in tactics can change this, but the way Gerrard likes to play is with high full-backs, all the play goes through them. Lucas Digne, has had an awkward start to his Villa career with him and Cash already getting criticism from the Villa Faithful.

Now... onto the main problem, the strikers. An awful goal-scoring record from both Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins with 9 goals between the two... Hold up play with Ollie has been awful in recent weeks, and there is a reason he was dropped for Ings in the last game. Young Starboy Jacob Ramsey is our top goal-scorer this season, with just the 5 goals this season. ALOT has to change from now until the end of the season if we want to get into the top half.

Us as fans of this wonderful club, all we can do in a purple patch such as this is support the team no matter what! Lets hope for a better game against Brighton.
