Youri Tielemans - an Aston Villa issue revisited

Since his arrival at Villa Park during the early months of the summer transfer window, Youri Tielemans has been the subject of many complaints surrounding his performances. Many among the Villa faithful have been critical regarding his time on the pitch. As a club and as a fanbase, we must remain patient.

During his time at Leicester city, Youri was highly regarded and linked with moves to top European clubs in the champions league. He famously scored the winning goal in the 20/21 FA Cup final and has a highlight reel to match the best. So, why do many say his early Villa appearances have been underwhelming?

With just how dynamic Tielemans was at Leicester, many may have expected him to start quickly at Villa park. However, it is important to remember the context of the 22/23 season. Youri and Leicester were relegated in stunning fashion , with many during pre season predicting a top half finish. Such a blow to a highly talented player is bound to have a negative influence on their mentality. However fans, as entitled as they are to hold whatever views they like, fail to consider factors such as these. Although he has performed to a higher standard, earning his first assist against West Ham and first goal against AZ Alkmaar, there are still some who view Tielemans as having to mount a "redemption" despite only signing 4 months ago.

Youri Tielemans is not the only Aston Villa player in recent seasons to suffer this treatment, and this is the real issue facing the fanbase. Every season, no matter how positive performances and results are, there is seemingly always at least one individual isolated for mass criticism and in some cases mass abuse. Before Youri came Leon Bailey, who had "disappointing" performances following an injury laden first season and then proceeding that being managed by "professional football manager" Steven Gerrard. John Mcginn, our now captain, was even lauded by fans following 11 months under the man now working for Al Ittifaq. So much so that according to Jacob Tanswell and the Athletic, our captain was considering leaving to West Ham United. Tyrone Mings, someone who truly loves Villa as much as we love him, was considered a scapegoat for mistakes which to some in the fanbase overshadowed years of hard work and commitment at our club.

In a time where we fans can be so positive about our performances and the general running of the club, some will still choose to be negative and target specific players. Especially in the time of fans, players and staff all using social media, the voices of fans are now more important than ever. Whether it's at villa park or over the internet, let's support our team.
